Austurhøfn, Reykjavik, 2001

A competition for the central harbor area in Reykjavik.

The first step in an open competition for a concert hall, conference center and a hotell - all included in a megastructure connecting the center of Reykjavik and the harbor. The project works with a series of urban spaces securing an interesting walk from the main square to the harbor outside and inside through the public spaces of the concert hall. The whole complex is covered with lava rock, drawing on the Icelandic landscape which becomes the main surface of the building, accessible from the main square. Underneath is the lava surging with life, with reference to the representative space of the elves living in rock formations in Iceland.
